農地周辺の景色 / A view around the farm site

7月末〜8月頭と2週間ほど日本帰国しました。贅沢にも今年2度目の帰国。
元々決まっていた予定もあり2週間はあっという間・・・でしたが、充実した時間を過ごし、仕事で使う物資も色々と日本でゲットしてモザンビークにまた戻ってきました。
正直なことを言えば、なんでわざわざモザンビークに戻るんだ自分・・・と思ったりもする。
日本の家族や友達に会えないのは寂しいし、モザンビークの生活も慣れたとはいえ不便やストレスも多いし、会社経営だってチャレンジばかり。
そんな状況から逃げたくもなりますが、よくよく考えてみれば自分なりに考えて選択した結果今ここにいるんですよね。
日本にいたってストレスやチャレンジはあるわけだし。
何よりナマーシャの素晴らしい自然環境の中で、ずっとやりたかった農業をやってみようと自分で決めたことなので、素敵な農園をつくために引き続き突き進んでいきます。
私が日本に行っている間は、会社の従業員ががんばって仕事をしてくれていました。
現在給水システムの確立に取り組んでいますが、近くの川から水を引くためのパイプを地面に埋め込む大変な作業が完了していました。頼もしい！
私が帰ってきて、改めてポンプを川沿いに設置し（ずっと置いておくと盗まれてしまうため）、パイプを繋ぎ、試運転してみました。
50mくらいかな、少し丘を登るパイプの先端から水が出るのを待つも、水が出ない。
パイプ沿を戻って歩いてみると数ヵ所で水漏れ発見！
実は中古のパイプを再利用していて、状態が悪いところを切って繋ぎ直したり、穴が空いているところにゴムをあてて縛って塞いだりしていましたが、それら箇所から水漏れしていました。
見事に失敗！重力や水圧の力を思い知る、いい機会になりました。
みんなで相談して、水漏れを防ぐ方法を考案。
失敗から次のステップへ進むところです。
これでうまくいったら水をゲットできます。
私が不在の間、従業員がコンポストの方も何度かひっくり返してくれた様ですが、こちらはあまり分解が進んでいない様子。
色々分析してみると、おそらく水分が足りていないのではという結論に。
なのでまずは水を効率的に運べる様にして、そこからコンポストにも水分補給してあげます。
こんな感じで前進中です。
たった今モザンビークは冬の乾季から春に向かっている途中。
毎日が晴れで、雨が振ったらできない作業ができる貴重な時間でもあります。
給水システムとコンポストに加えて、農園の敷地のフェンス張りもやります。
そうしないと近隣農家さんの牛さん馬さんが放牧中に私が植えた美味しい植物食べちゃうので。。。
これも労力がかかる作業なので、早く始めたいところ。
一方で私の庭の方では春夏野菜に向けた準備も進めていかねば。
野菜、ハーブ、日本で買ってきた種も。楽しみだ〜。
欲張れば欲張るほど種を植える作業は結構大変な作業なので、しっかりプランを立てて楽しく取り組んでいきたいと思います。

コンポストの分解を促進させるには水分が不可欠 / The decomposition of compost requires water
I was back in Japan for two weeks from the end of July to the beginning of August. This was the second time this year that I had the luxury of returning to Japan.
The two weeks went by very quickly... but I spent quality time with my family and friends and came back again to Mozambique with suitcase full of supplies from Japan.
To be honest, I sometimes wonder why I am doing what I am doing now in Mozambique...
I miss my family and friends in Japan, life in Mozambique could be quite inconvenient and stressful, and running a company here is full of challenges.
Such situations tempt me to quitting everything, but if you think about it, I made the choice to do this myself in the first place.
Even if I were in Japan, there would be stresses and challenges.
Above all, I was strongly attracted to the environment in Namaacha and I made a choice on my own to establish my farm, which is something I have always wanted to do.
So I will continue working toward creating a beautiful farm!
While I was in Japan, the company employees worked very hard on my behalf.
We are currently trying to establish a water supply system, and the work of laying pipes into the ground for bringing water from a nearby river has been successfully completed.
When I returned, we put the pump alongside the river, connected the pipes, and gave it a trial run.
The entire pipe is about 50 metres I think, which runs uphill. We waited for the water to come out at the end of the pipe, but no water came out.
We soon found out that there are leaks in several places along the pipe!
In fact, the pipes are second-hand and had several places that needed to be cut/reconnected. For those places, we wrapped rubber around and tied them tightly with some wire, but that was not enough and water was leaking from those places.
A big failure!
We gained a great lesson about the power of gravity and water pressure.
From there, we discussed and came up with another way to prevent water leakage.
We are about to move on to the next step.
If this works, we will get access to water!
While I was away, my employee has also worked on turning the compost over a few times but the compost doesn't seem to be decomposing very well.
It seems that there is not enough water in the compost.
So after completing the water system successfully, we will work on the compost with more water this time.
This is where we are now on our progress for the farm.
Right now, Mozambique is on its transition from dry winter to spring.
Every day is sunny and this is a precious time when we can work on things that would be difficult if it rains.
In addition to the water supply system and composting, we also need to put fence around the farm site. Otherwise the neighbouring farmer's cows and horses may graze the plants I am planting.
This is also a labour-intensive work, so I want to get started as soon as possible.
Meanwhile in my own garden, I am preparing for planting spring and summer vegetables.
I'm looking forward to planting vegetables, herbs and some seeds I bought in Japan.
The more variety of plants means more work for actually planting them, so I need a good seeding plan!
