I lived in Chichijima, Ogasawara Islands in Japan for 2 years from 2019 to 2021.
It was where I worked for the first time in the environmental conservation field after obtaining my masters in the UK.
First time living in the Ogasawara, first time working with sea turtles… it was a fresh start.
And A LOT happened during I was there.
Yes a lot happened, but I met wonderful people there and now I truly and deeply feel how blessed I am for still having connections with the people.
My wife and I thought hard on where to visit during our stay in Japan this time.
Chichijima was always in our minds.
We sorted out our other priorities and we managed to work out the time necessary to visit the island.
My wife’s mother joined, and we hopped onto the Ogasawara-Maru ferry for a 6-day adventure to Chichijima.
小笠原諸島・父島に住んでいたのは2019年3月~2021年3月の2年間。
イギリスで修士をとって、初めての環境保全関連の仕事。
初めての小笠原生活。初めてのウミガメの仕事・・・初めてずくしだった。
いろいろ、あったな〜笑。
いろいろあったんですが、本当に素敵な人たちとの出会いがあって、今はそのような出会い・繋がりがあることがどれだけ有難いことかを、じんわりと感じている。
今回、日本に帰ってくるにあたって、どこに行こうか大変に悩んで。
妻も一緒に日本にいるレアなタイミング、1ヶ月の期間、ん、小笠原行けるんじゃね？！と、他の予定も踏まえたうえで、おがさわら丸1航海分の時間をつくりだしたのであった。
妻の母も一緒に、船での移動も含めて5泊6日の旅。
We had such a dreamy time in Chichijima.
Its been 2 years since I left the island, and it felt like coming back to my old home after a long time.
For 3 days, we fully enjoyed different activities in the island, both the mountain and the sea.
The water was quite cold though…
結論から言うと、大変楽しい、夢のような日々でした。
2年ぶりの父島、懐かしさを感じ、故郷に帰ってきたような気持ち。
父島での3日間、山も海もフルに楽しんだ。
海水は冷たかったけど・・・。
We met many people while we were here.
We went to different places within the island to have some coffee, watch whales and sunset from the viewpoint, and talked.
I visited my former work place, Ogasawara Marine Center, and met with my old colleagues and sea turtles.
One evening, the owner of the house where I used to live, invited us for dinner.
Just like when I used to live here, friends gathered in the house with home cooked dishes, made with fish and veggies from the island.
We talked, ate, drank and laughed a lot.
My heart was full.
滞在中、沢山の人に会った。
島のいろんなところでお茶をしたり、展望台に行ってクジラや夕陽を見たり、ただ会って会話したり。
私が働いていた海洋センターでも、懐かしいスタッフ、ウミガメたちに会えた。
ある夜、私が住んでいた家の大家さんが食事に招いてくれた。
私が住んでいた時と同じように、仲良しのメンバーが集まって、島の魚、島の野菜、みんなの手料理を囲んで皆んなで大笑いして・・・。
とっても幸せでした。
Fun times fly, and soon it was time for everybody to go home.
It felt like one of those days when I used to live here, and it was a bit sad to realise that I will be going back to Tokyo in a few days.
Maybe, in the future, I could consider living here again…?
Not sure, but hey, never know!
I am so grateful that we could come here this time.
わいわい皆んなで食べて笑って、楽しい時間はあっという間に過ぎていく。
住んでいた時の延長線上にいるようだけど、あと数日で内地に帰るという切なさが同時に襲ってくる。
あ〜また小笠原住むのもいいよな〜なんて、ちょっと思ったりして・・・。
人生どうなることやら！
でも本当に今回、来ることができて、よかった。
Thank you for all the people who spared time to meet us and giving us such warm memories.
I couldn’t meet everybody, but I’m sure to come back again.
I hope I can visit in the summer season next time when the turtles nest and the sea is warmer.

会えなかった方もいますが、また島には必ず行きます。
次回は夏に、ウミガメの産卵と、ぽかぽかな海を狙って行きたいな。
